Tomato leaves stain clothes! When you pick your tomatoes wear your old clothes because brushing against tomato leaves can stain your clothes. I used to wear a white hat while gardening and I got these yucky greenish brown marks on it. I couldn’t figure out where they came from. And I couldn’t get them out so I had to throw away the hat. Then I noticed the same stains on a good shirt of mine and even using stain removers I couldn’t get them out.
Tomato Leaves Stain Clothes
I finally figured out that if I brushed by tomato plants the leaves would leave a stain on my clothing. I guess when I was wearing my white hat and bending close to a tomato plant the leaves would brush my hat. I was glad when I realized what was happening so I wouldn’t ruin any more clothing. My husband also had a stain on one of his good shirts which you can see in the photo. I made a trip to the thrift store and purchased some clothing just for gardening.
Be Careful When you Pick Tomatoes
So be careful when you pick your tomatoes. If you have smaller plants in an orderly garden you can probably get away with picking tomatoes without getting any stains. But my plants are large and all over the place. As much as I plan my garden by the end of the summer there are no neat paths so I could brush by tomato leaves at any time. I found this article on the internet describing the secretion from tomato leaves. Read the last 2 answers. They are very interesting. Who would believe that tomato leaves stain clothes and that you have to be careful when you walk through your garden!
