Composting With Worms-Cheap & Easy Vermicomposting Bins

Composting With Worms-Cheap & Easy Vermicomposting BinsAre you thinking about composting with worms?  The choices on the internet for vermicomposting bins can be expensive and overwhelming.  But you would like to take some steps to process your kitchen wastes instead of throwing them away.  I want to propose some inexpensive ways to get started.

You can have a simple plastic worm bin with a minimal investment.  I once bought a plastic tub (see picture) and dinner plate at Dollar Tree for a total of $2 plus tax.  It worked out very well for an experimental worm bin.  You could also try this for a science fair project.  It is just the right size and would make a great science fair entry.  Of course, you won’t be able to compost a lot of scraps in this size.  But this way you can learn all about worm composting and see if it works for you without spending a lot of money.

You can be creative with your choice of a worm bin.  I have heard of free bins made out of old coolers, dresser drawers, or plastic buckets.  You do need a cover–a piece of cardboard would work fine.  A slighty larger option than the Dollar Tree container is a 5 gallon Sterilite container which I just bought at Wal-Mart for $3.50.  You can buy 1/4 lb of red wiggler worms and the bin for less than $25 and that includes shipping the worms.  Click below for more info.

Before ordering worms you should have your bin ready and waiting for them.  The next step is setting up the bin which I will cover in my next post.
