Yoga and Gardening – Stretch While You Garden!
Yoga and gardening can be a perfect combination. I have a yoga class on Sunday mornings after my gardening. Often I just want to stay in the garden and keep working. It is so nice outside and I have momentum in my gardening. It is hard to stop and go to class. Then I decided to incorporate some yoga moves into my gardening.
If you are experienced at yoga then you will know what you can handle. If you have no experience you should check with your physician and use common sense before you try the poses. One yoga pose that can work well in the garden is a wide-legged forward bend. You can bend down to do some gardening and be stretching at the same time. If you can’t reach the ground use a yoga block to stretch and don’t worrry about gardening for the time being. Just fold over and rest your hands on the yoga block and stretch a little. In time you will be able to bend a little closer to the ground. Yoga, like gardening, is all about the process. Things take time to grow and it takes time to become more flexible!
You can also try a regular standing forward bend to reach the ground to plant seeds or seedlings or to pull weeds. Be gentle with yourself, if you have to bend your knees a little that is fine. I always bend my knees a little. Stretch slowly and don’t do too much. Use your imagination to incorporate stretching into your regular gardening activities. I always try to stretch a little longer at whatever I am doing to get more benefit from my gardening.
Attending a regular yoga practice will help build strength, flexibility and balance all which will be very helpful in your gardening.
