Worm Composting Science Fair Projects

Worm composting science fair projects give you an opportunity to approach worm composting in a few different ways.  By using worms in your science fair project display you will get the Yuck and the Excitement factor.  Some people/kids will be delighted to see the worms and to learn about them.  Some will say yuck and be disgusted.  What I have found is that even with those who say yuck; if given an opportunity to touch the worms wearing latex gloves most will come around to have some excitement or curiosity about the worms.

Ways to Approach Worm Composting Science Fair Projects

1. Recycling-Environmental Issues

Worms are great recyclers making them great for the environment and for demonstrating environmental issues!  Have you ever thought how much food garbage is buried in landfills?  By having a worm composting bin and by using math you can demonstrate how much food garbage could be saved from going into the landfills.  In turn the food scraps would be turned into worm compost which will greatly benefit any soil.  First you could:

  1. Measure the weight of the food scraps that your composting worms consume in a week.
  2. Calculate how many people in your city might have a worm bin or what if it was required?  Then the whole population of homes would need a worm bin.
  3. Multiply the weight of food scraps consumed in a week by the number of families using worm bins by 52 weeks.  You will have the amount of food scraps saved from your city’s waste disposal system.  This is recycling at its best!

2. Process of Worm Composting

You can show in graphic detail how worms can change shredded newspaper and food scraps into rich worm compost that is great for plants.  You could have a small bin showing how you start off, and examples of what it looks like in the middle of the process and at the end.  You could set up an experiment to see what is the best bedding that the worms like.  You could show the life cycle of the composting worm.  If you have a bin going all the stages are in there from cocoons to baby worms to the adults.  Maybe you could set up a laptop showing baby redworms coming out of the cocoon.

3. What Do Worms Eat?

Set up experiments using different food scraps and this would demonstrate which foods worms like the best and which they process the fastest.  There is no point in filling a worm bin with food that the worms don’t like,  Providing the proper food enhances their reproduction  and development.

4. Experimental Use of Worm Castings

These worm composting science fair projects would take the longest to execute.  Maybe you would only do this if you already have worm compost or if you could buy some. You can order worm castings from this link:  worm castings from Veterans Compost.

This experiment involves using worm compost in the potting soil or by itself to see which combination produces the best plant growth.  Another experiment along a similar line is to water regular seedlings in regular potting soil  i.e. no worm compost with plain water and some with worm compost tea to see which gives the best results.

As you can see here are a few ideas to create worm composting science fair projects or create your own!  Enjoy!
